Prison Ministry & Reintegration

To bring the Gospel, discipleship, and rehabilitation support to inmates.

At a glance

The work at a glance.

Zambia’s prisons are crowded, and many inmates feel forgotten. Purpose Life teams visit faithfully — sharing the gospel, teaching the Bible, counselling and baptising those who believe.

We don’t stop at the prison gate. After release we follow men and women home, help them reconnect with family and community, and train those God calls to lead. Fourteen former inmates now pastor churches in their own villages.

What this includes

  • Bible studies, discipleship lessons and personal counselling inside correctional facilities.
  • Baptisms in prison for inmates who give their lives to Christ.
  • Follow-up after release: reconnecting with family, community and a local church.
  • Leadership training for former inmates called to pastor.

Why it matters

Prisons are full — and hope is scarce.

Zambia’s correctional facilities hold more than two and a half times the number of people they were built for. Overcrowding, separation from family and the stigma that follows release leave many inmates without hope — and at risk of returning.

A faithful visitor, a Bible and a church waiting at home can change that story.

Prison Ministry

A life restored behind bars

John had lost hope after years of incarceration. Through Bible study and GROW discipleship he found conviction, healing, and a new calling — and now leads other inmates in prayer and the Word.

Prison Ministry

Baptised in prison, now a village pastor

Lameck entered prison believing his future was hopeless. Through Bible studies, discipleship and counselling from the Purpose Life team he gave his life to Christ and was baptised inside the prison. After his release the team kept discipling him — and today he pastors the church planted in his village.

Prison Ministry

The joy of a baptism behind bars

Kondwani carried guilt, shame and fear into prison and thought God could never forgive him. Through Bible studies he met Jesus, was baptised in prison and found peace for the first time in years. Today he pastors a church planted in his village.

Prison Ministry

From rejected to shepherd

Saulo entered prison feeling worthless and rejected. At a prison fellowship meeting he heard that Jesus loved him and died for him. After his release, Purpose Life helped him reconnect with his community and start a fellowship that has grown into a church he now pastors.

Prison Ministry

Prison was not the end of his story

Tito thought prison was the end of his story. Through the gospel shared by Purpose Life he found a new beginning, was baptised in prison and was mentored after release. Today he shepherds a church in his village.

Prison Ministry

Fourteen prisoners. Fourteen pastors.

Fourteen men met Jesus in Zambian prisons through the Purpose Life prison ministry. Each was baptised behind bars, discipled after release and now pastors a church planted in his own village. In their own words, this is what changed.

“When I was released, Purpose Life International continued to follow up with me, encourage me, and disciple me. Today, by God’s grace, I serve as the pastor of that church.”

Questions

Common questions about prison ministry.

How often do you visit prisons?

Our teams visit regularly for fellowship meetings, Bible study and counselling. How often depends on each facility and the access granted by the Zambia Correctional Service.

Do you work with the prison authorities?

Yes. Every visit is arranged with facility management, and we serve officers and staff as well as inmates.

What happens when an inmate is released?

We follow them home. Our team helps them reconnect with family, find a local church and keep growing as a disciple — and trains those who are called to lead.

Can former prisoners really become pastors?

They already have. Fourteen men who came to faith and were baptised in prison now pastor churches planted in their home villages.

How can I help?

Pray, give towards Bibles and follow-up visits, or get in touch about volunteering. Volunteers are screened and trained before visiting a facility.
